Community Leadership Assessment Tool

Community foundations, as local philanthropic institutions whose missions are focused on the betterment of the communities in which they are embedded, have taken on an increasingly diverse set of roles beyond "grantmaker," including philanthropic advisor, non-profit capacity builder, coalition-builder, and more broadly, community leader, in an ongoing pursuit to create equitable communities that work for all. As community foundations continue their work as active players in creating positive impact by embracing these roles, the field’s desire to track this journey beyond the use of traditional, asset-based, financial metrics has only grown.

The Community Leadership Assessment Tool provides a set of detailed indicators to help community foundations better understand their level of engagement across several dimensions of community leadership, including the lifting up of community voice, policy advocacy, coordination among networks, a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and much more.

The Community Leadership Assessment Tool emerged from an 18-month development process of interviewing field leaders, a thorough review of related tools, and two pilot studies. We are pleased to make this tool available to the entire field.

At the foundation-level, this tool is designed to inform practice. For foundation-level discussions emerging out of the Community Leadership Assessment Tool, it may be useful to engage CFLeads or other external facilitators or consultants to guide conversations around practice. CF Insights can also assist the foundation in examining its operating model and ability to expand its investment of resources in community leadership efforts.

At the field level, results from this tool will be aggregated by CF Insights to provide a broader perspective on how foundations are engaging in community leadership efforts.

The online version of the Community Leadership Assessment Tool is available here. CF Insights encourages your community foundation to submit your results via the online version to inform field-wide reporting and benchmarking.

A blog post by Simeon Banister, Vice President, Community Programs at Rochester Area Community Foundation, shares his first impressions of the tool and the value he believes it will bring to the field.

Average scores for each of the items are available here. Initial benchmarking averages are based on a sample of 34 responses collected during the pilot. Over time, as more foundations use the tool and submit their scores online, averages will become more reliable. CF Insights will also use aggregated, field-wide data to publish periodic briefs on the state of community leadership work.
